It's interesting to me that in the U.S. universities and colleges are big business, but no one really knows what to do with the products, that is, the graduates. There are so many people with English degrees and degrees in the arts, but there's no real framework that allows these people to easily get jobs. Meanwhile, the technically minded students from the U.S. tend not to go into the hard sciences, but rather into finance and business. It seems to me that the problem is that the model of gainful employment that many have grown up expecting to slot into upon graduation, combined with the degrees offered by institutions of higher learning that end up being chosen by U.S. students is a major factor compounding the lack of available jobs in the current economy.
