Our Neanderthal cousins keep surprising us with their abilities. They buried their dead with artifacts which they originally were not supposed to have the capacity for. They made jewelry. Now they are making art . . . maybe. Even if these dates hold up, I was reading recently that homo sapiens were found in the Levant much sooner than originally believed which raises the possibility they were in Europe sooner too (see link below).

It really would be something though if Neanderthals independently developed a form of art similar to homo sapiens on a different continent.
