I agree, but then recommend reading WJ Cash's The Mind of the South. If only for the skill with which he gave a Marxist-in-all-but-name analysis of Southern history in such a way that southerners could accept it, a feat that the modern, much-further-to-the-Right-than-Cash, writers have never been able to replicate.
