Yes, the child wasn't his. We'll never know if he murdered the kid or if the kid really did just die of crib death (or the wife could have killed the kid). That's all up to your interpretation. What the wife knows and doesn't know and thinks she knows is also up for interpretation, depending on how you take the events of the story. It's all up to you!
