The notion that we should be thinking of these receptors as simply chemical detectors is spot on. They are everywhere doing their job, happily signalling away. The interesting stuff will oftentimes happen downstream of the receptor. I remember when these receptors were first cloned by Linda Buck and shortly afterwards were shown to be present in testes, people were pretty stoked that these chemoreceptors could be signalling in both places.
