I may be less averse to the term than you are, but I can see what you mean. I like that it lent much deserved (and long denied) dignity to the art of cocktail design, but no sooner had it been coined than it became ubiquitous buzz term, a perpetually misapplied label used to slap on an extra layer of aggrandizement and pretentiousness -- because that's what the hip bar scene really needed.
More importantly, I couldn't agree more that becoming a good bartender is a truly enviable achievement -- and an entirely different thing from establishing oneself as a mixologist.
