Exactly. You have a choice, after all. If your skills were valuable enough to be worth paying for, someone would pay for them.

They're not paying for your skills because either you don't have those skills yet, or there is a superfluity of those skills in the marketplace. In either case, it means there is a long ladder to climb, with many other people alongside and ahead of you.

But it's up to you whether you persist, or choose a different, easier ladder. It's not slavery.
