Depending on the book, a few days to a week. I tend to really get into reading moods where I'll knock out whole series in a few days like a Netflix binge. Books like Dune, The Dresden Files, and I just started The Gaea Trilogy go down pretty smooth.

I can definitely understand giving up on a book if its not interesting to you. Sue me, but it takes a pretty strong recommendation to get me to read a book if it doesn't hook me in the first few chapters (for novels) or at least be a topic I'm interested in.

I've never really thought of reading as an achievement, but the comprehension of the material and being able to analyze the parts of the book are something I find amusing more than just the story.
